2012 ALR189 Elections
The 2012 ALR189 elections were held at our February 2nd monthly meeting. The offices of President, Treasure, and Secretary were uncontested, so Paul Russo, Joe Paino, and Crystal Paino will retain these offices for 2012.
There were three candidates running for Vice President. Long standing Vice President Sophie M. Liberatore, Membership Chairperson Donna J. Danyluk, and member Jim Cushman. Jim Cushman won the position of Vice President. All the members of American Legion Riders Post 189 give a hardy congratulations to Jim. Also all the members would like to give thanks to Sophie M. Liberatore for years of excellence as Vice President, and to Donna J. Danyluk for her excellent work as Membership Chairperson. Below are two photos from that night.

Facebook is not only good for friends and family to keep in contact. But it is also good place for bikers to keep in touch with each other. American Legion Riders (ALRs), Motorcycle Clubs (MCs) Riding Clubs (RCs) Harley Owner Groups (HOGs), and other motorcycle organizations are going online with Facebook. Red Knights Motorcycle Club Chapter 40 New York has recently joined American Legion Riders Post 189, American Legion Riders Post 259 – Oneonta, NY, Freebirds MC, and Worn & Weathered MC on Facebook. If you are in a ALR, MC, RC, HOG, or other motorcycle group and don’t have a Facebook page. You might consider setting one up. It is not to hard. If you need help, it is possible I could help you, so drop me a line if you do.

Mesothelioma
My lay knowledge of Mesothelioma is that it is a cancer cause by exposure to asbestos. The government started regulating asbestos in the mid 1970s. I remember during my early welding days when I lined a welding rod oven I built with asbestos.
Periodically I get requests from Mesothelioma “organizations” to put a link for their website on ALR189.com. Every time I investigate one of these organizations websites I find out that they are a front for a law firm. So I decided to contact an expert to find out how a veteran can find information on Mesothelioma. I emailed Chenango county NY Veterans’ Employment Representative Paul Russo. He gave me information to help me write this story – thanks Paul.
Here are two basic definitions on Mesothelioma. First one is from the Mayo Clinic, and the second one is from U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs which Paul Russo relayed to me.
Malignant mesothelioma (me-zoe-thee-lee-OH-muh) is a rare cancer that occurs in the thin layer of tissue that covers the majority of your internal organs (mesothelium).
Definition;
By Mayo Clinic staff
High and/or prolonged exposures to asbestos dusts can cause cancer in humans. There are two types of respiratory cancer caused by exposure to asbestos: mesothelioma and lung cancer.
Definition;
By U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs
If you are or know of a veteran who thinks they might have Mesothelioma, look at Occupational and Environmental Exposures: Asbestos from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. Then contact your local Veterans Affairs Representative. If you live in Otsego, Delaware, Chenango, and Broome counties NY, drop me a line and I will pass to you the info Paul gave me on the times and days that you can talk to your representative.
